This summer our team are going to the Inhambrane province in Mozambique to assist a small Swiss charity in designing and building a timber footbridge in a village called Conguinana.
The issue is that the soil is swamp land that becomes a river during the rainy season, this means that the soils undergo a big variation in water level and saturation, making it difficult to precisely analyze the soil. There used to be a bridge in the same location but it fell due to bad foundation design so we want to make sure that this doesn't happen again.
Our main objective this summer is to complete an accurate site investigation.
We would really appreciate any advice regarding accurately sampling soils of this type. We have already spoken to members of the University College London staff but some advice from people with more on site experience would be very helpful.
I have attached our project proposal for whoever is interested.
Thanks
Ruben
